Static and dynamic postural control is provided by the vestibular system. A static balance assessment was performed on unilateral vestibular impaired patients in this study. Using the Kistler force plate platform, 10 patients with unilateral vestibular impairments and 20 normal controls were compared in the same sex ratio and age limits (50 to 57) for static balance control purposes. Center of pressure (COP) excursion and velocity were assessed in mediolateral (ML) and anteroposterior (AP) planes. In both groups with and without eyes closed, COP excursions in ML and AP planes were not significantly different (p > 0.05). Conversely, both groups with eyes open and closed showed significant differences in COP velocity and path length (p > 0.05). As indicated by the abnormal body balance characteristics of patients with vestibular impairments, this study shows static instability and balance in patients with vestibular impairments.
