Abstract

Irrational use of antibiotics is rampant and has caused lot of problems in combating dreadful diseases. There is a need to prescribe these drugs judiciously and rationally. Pattern of prescription is an important tool to make the remedial measures at primary level. This study was carried out at newly established Govt Medical College-Chamba. HP India. Out of 984 patients, 220(22.35%) patients received antibiotics. 50.91% patients were prescribed one antibiotic and 24.09% patients were prescribed FDCs. 52% prescriptions were irrational. Combinations of antibiotics were prescribed most commonly in 19.53% followed by fluroquinolones 17.36%. Conclusion of this study is to check the irrational prescriptions at primary health centre and there is a need to make the antibiotic restriction policy in every medical college to reform the antibiotic prescription pattern for resistance and also to check the ADRs of antibiotics by optimizing the methods with good clinical practice. Antibiotic policy is the need of hour for prophylaxis, empirical and definitive antibiotic therapy.
