MSG is the sodium salt of the glutamic acid responsible for their savoury taste of the food. Debate over the healthiness of MSG and its effects on human obesity and other health problems has led to a negative public opinion. The literature review assesses that the consumption of MSG adds weight gain, increases obesity, produces locomotor and learning deficit, and behavior and memory changes in rats. In the present study, adult swiss albino mice administered with MSG at a dose of 1000 mg/kg by oral intubation has shown abnormalities in behavioural phenotypes, antioxidant parameters, decrease in relative organ weight of brain and histological changes as compared vehicle treated mice. From the present study it is concluded that ingestion of MSG may responsible for neuronal damage in animals as well as humans having daily or extreme use of MSG in food.
