Ficus benghalensis being used in the folk medicine to treat various diseases and disorders, no literatures are available justifying its activity against oral and skin cancer. Present study aimed to investigate the cytotoxic activity of hydroalcoholic extract and its fractions of leaves of Ficus benghalensis against KB (oral cancer), A-431(skin cancer) and NIH3T3 (normal mouse fibroblast) cell lines. MTT assay was carried out for this purpose. We found that hydroalcoholic extract (FB-1) is cytotoxic to cancerous cells as well as normal mouse fibroblasts. Among the fractions, n-hexane fraction (FB-2) showed specific cytotoxicity towards cancerous cell lines. Cytotoxic activity against the cancerous cell lines may be due to presence of non- polar constituents in the extract and fractions. Hence, n-hexane fraction of leaves of F. benghalensis could be potential source for the development of therapeutic agent against oral and skin cancer.
