Parkinson’s disease is a chronic neurodegenerative disorder characterized by the loss of dopamine neurons in the substantia nigra, decreased striatal dopamine levels, and consequent extrapyramidal motor dysfunction. Mitochondrial dysfunction and oxidative stress are implicated in the neurodegenerative process in Parkinson's disease (PD).The Present study evaluated whether Boerhaavia diffusa provide protective role against MPTP induced neurotoxicity in Male wistar rats. This work evaluated five groups of wistar rats, Normal control, Perse control (250mg/kg), Toxic control MPTP induced (20mg/kg), G4 &G5 i.e treatment with 200mg/kg & 400mg/kg of hydroalcoholic extract of Boerhaavia diffusa in MPTP treated rats for 21 days. Here we investigated the effects of this extract on antioxidant enzymes such as catalase (CAT), superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione peroxidases (GPx), total antioxidant & lipid peroxidase. Motor activity and behavioral changes observed using actophotometer & elevated pluz maze. After treatment with Hydroalcoholic extract of Boerhaavia diffusa it shows significant increase in glutathione peroxidase, catalase, superoxide dismutase and total antioxidants and significant lowering of lipid peroxide levels in MPTP induced rats.HAEBD significantly improves behavioral activities in MPTP treated rats. The oxidative stress and related biochemical alteration induced by MPTP were attenuated by Boerhaavia diffusa treatment which renders significant Neuroprotection against MPTP induced neurotoxicity.
