Socio-Economic Status (SES) is an important determinant of health, nutritional status and morbidity and mortality patterns and also an important component of any community health-related research. A number of scales for assessment of SES are available in medical literature, each having their own limitations. The present study was conducted to identify profiles for the development of a new scale for assessment of SES. The present study was conducted in three blocks of Himachal Pradesh, selected through a simple random technique. 25 households were selected from each block. Some known indicators of socio-economic status scale were listed and submitted to both an expert group and the interviewer for development of profiles. The profiles so prepared were matched and submitted again for the final layout of the profiles. A total of seven profiles were developed i.e. House profile, Material possession, Education, Occupation, Per capita Income, Possession of land / House cost and Social profile. Conclusion: Development of profiles may help reduce the rigidness in SES scales.
