Abstract

A study was conducted to examine the significance of serum BuChE activity as risk factor for cardiovascular diseases. Diabetic profile and serum BuChE activity was assayed in 96 subjects. The serum BuChE activity increased as the age advanced. Diabetics had higher BuChE activity than non-diabetics. BuChE activity had a positive co-relation with fasting plasma glucose and HbA1c levels. Hyper-cholestrolaemic subjects had a significantly higher BuChE activity and Total cholesterol/ HDL-c ratio. But the BuChE/HDL-c ratio did not vary significantly. The BuChE activity was significantly higher in hyper-triglyceridaemic group compared to subjects with normal serum TG. The TC/HDL-c ratio as well as BuChE/HDL-c ratio were higher in hyper-triglyceridaemic group. Though all these patients had their BuChE levels within the reference limit, the BuChE/HDL-c ratio remained significantly higher in hyperlipidaemic group indicating it as a useful marker to indicate risk for cardiovascular disease.
