Abstract

The most frequent Human echovirus 9 and 11 isolates from the North Indian children with features of acute flaccid paralysis (AFP) were studied. The variability of the partial sequence of 5’UTR and its influence on virulence should consider an important target for comparative sequence analysis of variant E9 and 11. Cell culture and RT-PCR methods used for detection of 16 E11 and two of E9 isolates during 2006-2008. Out of which few isolates of E11 and E9 were further studied followed by sequence analysis of 5’UTR region. The results showed high genomic variability in a partial sequence of 5’UTR with a prototype strain of E9 and E11 during sequence analysis. Sequences of the Indian isolates are identical with those from different parts of the world and showed variability to different enteroviruses. Further analysis of E9 and E11 isolates may reveal if recombination occurred in Asia or India and help to elucidate the origin of this virus.
